Strawberries & Red Raspberries Blooming

Strawberry plants are still blooming, and some young fruit are developing, but some flowers have been killed by late freezes.  So the strawberry crop will be limited and quite late this year, from about May 20 to June 10.  As always, strawberries are sold pick-your-own only, by appointment only, so phone 620-597-2450 in mid-May to set a time to come pick strawberries.
Strawberry plants are still blooming, but some flowers, such as the one in the middle of the photo with the dark center, have been killed by late freezes, so won't develop into fruit.
Red raspberry plants are just starting to bloom, so red raspberries should be ripe about June 8 to July 14 this year.  Black raspberries should be ripe about June 15 to July 4, and purple raspberries should be ripe about June 18 to July 14.  The winter cold reduced the purple raspberry crop somewhat, but the red and black raspberry plants were not damaged much.

Thornless blackberry plants were heavily damaged by the winter cold, especially 'Ouachita' and 'Triple Crown' varieties.  We're having to prune all the raspberry and blackberry plants again, to remove dead sections of canes killed by mid-winter cold.  So our thornless blackberry crop will also be reduced this year.
'Ouachita' thornless blackberry plants, in foreground, were heavily damaged by the winter cold, so the crop will be reduced this year.  'Natchez' thornless blackberry plants, in background, were damaged less.
Asparagus is producing heavily now.  With the hot weather, it grows 8 to 12 inches in a day, so I harvest it twice a day.  We'll have harvested asparagus for sale until about June 10, for $2.79 per pound plus tax.
I'm harvesting 4 bags like this of asparagus a day during this hot weather.  I break the spears several inches off the ground, so they're tender almost to the base, unlike grocery-store asparagus.
We also still have 'Enterprise' and 'GoldRush' apples for sale, and cracked 'Kanza' pecans, now till about June 30.  Scroll down 3 posts for apple and pecan prices.  Phone 620-597-2450 and leave a message saying the day and time you plan to get here to buy apples, pecans and/or asparagus.
