Many Harvested Pears & Asian Pears, Few Apples Now

I'm still harvesting many 'Harrow Sweet' pears and 'Shinko' Asian pears, and we have many for sale.   'Harrow Sweet' pears are very sweet with a smooth, buttery texture, and are wonderful for baking and fresh eating.

We have many 'Harrow Sweet' pears for sale, now until early Nov.
'Shinko' Asian pears are very crisp, very sweet and very juicy, great for fresh eating, salads or stir-fry dishes.  For those who like huge Asian pears, we have many this year, some weighing over 1.0 pound each.  We also have some medium-sized Asian pears and pears, which many families with young kids prefer.

We have many 'Shinko' Asian pears for sale, now until late Oct.
I'm also harvesting a few apples from my apple breeding program, and have small amounts of these harvested apples for sale.  I give taste samples of all fruit varieties available when you come.

We sell harvested #1 pears and apples for $1.42 per pound + sales tax, and harvested #2 (2nds) pears and apples for $1.09 per pound + sales tax.  If you get a 20-pound box with 2 bags of #1 pears (or a bag of pears and a bag of apples), the price goes down to $1.37 per pound.  So a 20-pound box of #1 pears and/or apples costs $27.49 + sales tax, and you save a dollar.

All pears and Asian pears are sold harvested only.  We do not allow customers to pick pears or Asian pears because they're tricky to harvest at the right stage, and fruit will drop if not harvested promptly when ready.  Also, I pick most pears and Asian pears from a ladder, and we do not ever let customers use ladders.

Many have come to pick their own apples in the past week, and as I've been posting for the past 5 months, our apple crop is greatly reduced this year.  So our pick-your-own apple season will now end by Oct. 7, as shown in the updated left sidebar under Crop Sales Seasons.

While the pick-your-own (PYO) apple season lasts, #1 PYO apples cost $1.18 per pound + sales tax, and #2 (2nds) PYO apples cost $0.90 per pound + sales tax.  PYO means you harvest your own apples from the trees while you stand on the ground, and you buy everything you pick.

If you want to pick your own apples or buy harvested fruit on a weekday, Mon. to Fri., please call 620-597-2450 a day or two ahead and leave a message on our answering machine saying the day and about what time you plan to come, so I can expect you.

We prefer that people come to buy fruit and/or pick apples in late mornings, arriving here between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., or afternoons, arriving here between 1:30 and 5:00 p.m.  If you drop by, without calling a day ahead, during our Fall Open Hours (shown in the left sidebar), ring the bell on the sales building porch very loudly.

Those visiting us from Joplin, MO should take 7th St. to Galena, KS then Hwy. 66 to Riverton and Baxter Springs, KS, then Hwy. 166 for 15.0 miles west to Brenda's Berries & Orchards as usual.  Hwy. 166 is closed from Baxter Springs to 4.0 miles east of Baxter Springs for road work this fall.

Those visiting us from south of Joplin, MO can take Hwy. 60 west to Seneca, MO, then Hwy. 43 north to just past Seneca, MO, then Hwy. 10 west to Miami, OK, then Hwy. 69 north to Hwy. 166, then  Hwy. 166 for 9.5 miles west to Brenda's Berries & Orchards.

As always, we take cash or checks for payment, but NO credit cards or debit cards.  So please bring your checkbook or enough cash to cover the amount of fruit you want to buy.  Thanks.
