Many Pears & Asian Pears Ripe Now

I've almost finished harvesting 'Blake's Pride' pears, and we have many for sale now until late Sept.  These pears have a wonderful, sweet flavor and a smooth, buttery texture.  They're great for fresh eating, baking and canning.

We still have many 'Blake's Pride' pears for sale now until late Sept.
I'm harvesting many 'Shinko' Asian pears now, and we have many for sale now until early Oct.  Asian pears are shaped like apple and eaten fresh like apples, plus used in salads and stir-fry dishes.  They're very crunchy, very sweet and very juicy.  All pears and Asian pears are sold harvested only.

We have 'Shinko' Asian pears for sale now until early-mid Oct.
We still have many long-keeping 'Enterprise' and 'Sundance' harvested apples for sale.  These were harvested in Nov. 2022 and keep in top condition in our coolers at 34 F.  If you want more than 20 pounds of apples, please call 620-597-2450 a few days ahead and leave a message on our answering machine, so I can have them sorted, cleaned and packed for you.

I've just started harvesting the new apple crop, but it will be very sparse this fall. We have small amounts of a few apple varieties from my apple breeding program for sale now, and will have other of my varieties for sale until mid-late Nov.  I give taste samples of varieties available at the time that you come.

We sell harvested #1 pears and apples for $1.42 per pound + sales tax, and harvested #2 (2nds) pears and apples for $1.09 per pound + sales tax.  If you get a 20-pound box with 2 bags of #1 pears (or a bag of pears and a bag of apples), the price goes down to $1.37 per pound.  So a 20-pound box of #1 apples and/or pears costs $27.49 + sales tax, and you save a dollar.

Our pick-your-own apple season, shown in the left sidebar under Crop Sales Seasons, will only go for 3 to 3.5 weeks this fall, and we'll only have 'Enterprise' to pick. I checked the 'Enterprise' trees today and they're starting to ripen earlier than last year and most years, so we'll now start allowing customers to pick their own 'Enterprise' next Wed. Sept. 20.

Once our pick-your-own (PYO) apple season starts, #1 PYO apples will cost $1.18 per pound + sales tax, and harvested #2 (2nds) PYO apples will cost $0.90 per pound + sales tax.  PYO means you harvest your own apples from the trees while you stand on the ground, and you buy everything you pick.  Since our apple crop is very limited this fall, we can't accommodate school groups or other large groups wanting PYO apples this fall.

If you want to pick your own apples or buy harvested fruit on a weekday, Mon. to Fri., please call 620-597-2450 a day or two ahead and leave a message on our answering machine saying the day and about what time you plan to come.  I'm very busy harvesting pears or my breeding apples in the mornings, so I may not hear or see a vehicle come in if I'm not expecting you.  Many people come on Sat. and on Sun. afternoon, so those days I'm picking apples in our main apple orchard, where I can see the driveway.

We prefer that people come to get fruit and/or pick apples in late mornings, arriving here between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., or afternoons, arriving here between 1:30 and 5:00 p.m.  If you drop by, without calling a day ahead, during our Fall Open Hours (shown in the left sidebar), ring the bell on the sales building porch very loudly.

Those visiting us from Joplin, MO should take 7th St. to Galena, KS then Hwy. 66 to Riverton and Baxter Springs, KS, then Hwy. 166 for 15.0 miles west to Brenda's Berries & Orchards as usual.  Hwy. 166 is closed from Baxter Springs to 4.0 miles east of Baxter Springs for road work this fall.

As always, we take cash or checks for payment, but NO credit cards or debit cards.  So please bring your checkbook or enough cash to cover the amount of fruit you want to buy.  Thanks.
