Many Pears, Some Asian Pears, Few Apples Now

Our pick-your-own apple season is now over.  It ended on Oct. 7, as shown in the left sidebar under Crop Sales Seasons.

As I've been posting for the past 5 months, our apple crop is greatly reduced this year.  We had only 5% of a full crop on 'Enterprise' apples, and will have less than 1% of a full crop on 'Gold Rush' apples.

Many people have wanted harvested #2 'Enterprise' apples in the past week, to make pie filling, applesauce or apple butter.  We do not have any 'Enterprise' apples for sale now, but will have some the last week in Oct. and the first half of Nov.  These apples were harvested in Nov. 2022 from the bumper 'Enterprise' apple crop we had last year.  We still have some in our big cooler, and once I finish harvesting pears, I'll have time to sort, clean and pack these 'Enterprise' apples for sale.

'Harrow Sweet' pears are very sweet, great for fresh eating and make wonderful pie filling, pear sauce or pear butter.
I'm still harvesting many 'Harrow Sweet' pears for the next few days.  Right now we have 880 pounds of  'Harrow Sweet' pears in our cooler, packed in 20-pound boxes and ready to sell, plus about 45 pounds of #2 pears.  These pears are very sweet with a smooth, buttery texture, and are wonderful for baking and fresh eating.  They also make great pie filling, pear sauce or pear butter.  I like pear butter better than apple butter.

I've finished harvesting 'Shinko' Asian pears now.  As of now, we still have about 120 pounds of these for sale, plus about 65 pounds of #2 Asian pears.

'Shinko' Asian pears keep for 6 months in your fridge, but we'll sell out of them soon, so get them while we have them.
I'm still harvesting a few apples from my apple breeding program, and will have small amounts of these apples for sale as I harvest them.  I give taste samples of all fruit varieties available when you come.

We sell harvested #1 pears and apples for $1.42 per pound + sales tax, and harvested #2 (2nds) pears and apples for $1.09 per pound + sales tax.  If you get a 20-pound box with 2 bags of #1 pears (or a bag of pears and a bag of apples), the price goes down to $1.37 per pound.  So a 20-pound box of #1 pears and/or apples costs $27.49 + sales tax, and you save a dollar.

We'll have harvested, cracked pecans for sale starting Nov. 14.  Pecan sales start in mid-Nov. every year.  Thanks to the rain we got 3 weeks ago, we'll have a very good pecan crop this year, so we should have pecans for sale until at least mid-March 2024.

We sell cracked pecans in 4-pound bags, which are over 75% pecan kernels and under 25% shell fragments.  Each bag has the equivalent of 6 pounds of in-shell pecans, and when you pick out the pecan kernels, you get 3 pounds or more of nutmeats.  Each bag costs $18.96 + sales tax.

We prefer that people come to buy fruit in late mornings, arriving here between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., or afternoons, arriving here between 1:30 and 5:00 p.m.  We appreciate it if you phone 620-597-2450 a day ahead and leave a message on our answering machine saying the day and about what time you'll come, and what you want to buy.  If you drop by, without calling a day ahead, during our Fall Open Hours (shown in the left sidebar), ring the bell on the sales building porch very loudly.

Those visiting us from Joplin, MO should take 7th St. to Galena, KS then Hwy. 66 to Riverton and Baxter Springs, KS, then Hwy. 166 for 15.0 miles west to Brenda's Berries & Orchards as usual.  Hwy. 166 is closed from Baxter Springs to 4.0 miles east of Baxter Springs for road work this fall.

As always, we take cash or checks for payment, but NO credit cards or debit cards.  So please bring your checkbook or enough cash to cover the amount of fruit you want to buy.  Thanks.
